The Woke Mothers of Indian Films

Alia Bhatt in Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)

You must have heard this iconic dialogue from Gangubai Kathiawadi, where Bhatt's character, known as Gangu, fearlessly declares, "I am prostitute Gangu Bai, and I'm here to get my daughters into school. So what if I'm from the brothel? I'll make sure these girls have a chance at a better life." When asked about the father's name on the form, Gangu cleverly replies, "Isn't the mother's name enough?"

Gangu wasn't the biological mother of those children, but she defied norms by advocating for the education and opportunities her daughters deserved, just like anyone else. Wasn't Gangu the most progressive mother one could have had nearly 70 years ago? Her story is truly inspiring, showcasing her unwavering determination to secure a better future for her daughters despite facing discrimination.

Shamshunissa and Badrunissa, known as the "Nissa" mother-daughter duo, might have been seen as the darkest doers, but their backstory sheds light on the validity of their actions. But what makes Shefali Shah's character, Shamshu, worthy of being on the list of the wokest Bollywood mothers? As a single mother, she raised Alia Bhatt's character, Badru, and made a bold bet with her daughter: she could only marry her lover once he earned a settled job. Not stopping there, Shamshu stood by Badru even when her husband turned abusive.

Shamshu harboured progressive thoughts for her own life too. She ventured into making content for social media, realising its potential to transform her life if it went viral. She even embraced Zulfi's affection, who was her daughter's age, proving that age is just a number and no barrier to love.

Natasha Rastogi in Thank You For Coming (2023)

Bhumi Pednekar's character Kanika Kapoor's mother, Natasha Rastogi, as Dr. Bina Kapoor, is depicted as a gynaecologist and a single mother who chose not to marry the father of the child due to a lack of love in their relationship and brought the child alone. Drawing from her own experiences, she consistently guides her daughter.

When Kanika reaches the age of 30, rather than pressuring her to marry like many other mothers might, Kapoor encourages her to embrace her age and live a fulfilling life without rushing to find a life partner. She even advises Kanika not to worry about having children, as there are various options available, such as freezing eggs. Bina Kapoor embodies the kind of enlightened and feminist mother this generation truly needs. Kapoor emphasises that marriage and motherhood should not be rushed into based on societal expectations, as there is no specific age deemed "right" for either.
